This session will begin with the proposal that playfulness consist of (i) lightheartedness (ii) a pleasure-oriented flexibility in commitment to reality, (iii) the retention of knowledge that one is not "serious", and (iv) a collusive wink to all the parties involved in the interaction. The developmental origins of the capacity for playfulness will be touched upon and five psychopathological syndromes will be delineated: (i) deficient playfulness, (ii) pseudoplayfulness, (iii) inhibited playfulness, (iv) derailed playfulness, and (v) malignant playfulness. The role of playfulness in the therapeutic situation will be discussed with the help of illustrative vignettes that will demonstrate the uses, advantages, and risks of such an attitude within the clinical dyad.
