2025 Susan C. Warshaw Award Winner Announcement Benjamin Bernstein, Ph.D. “'What the hell was that?’: On Non-Directive Play Therapy with Adolescents” Dr. Benjamin Bernstein is a clinical psychologist, specializing in the treatment of adolescents, young adults and executives/professionals. His writing and expertise can be found in various publications, including The New York Times, The New Yorker, Psychology Today, Axios and Well + Good. He has held positions at college counseling centers, VA hospitals, state psychiatric centers and various outpatient clinics. He completed his undergraduate degree at Brown University and his doctorate at the City College of New York. In addition to his private practice, he serves as the Adolescent Psychologist and the Assistant Director of Education at Silver Hill Hospital. He previously served as the Director of the Argent Assessment Program at Silver Hill, leading a team that helped individuals from around the world understand themselves more deeply and move forward in their lives. He is a Clinical Supervisor for the City College of New York Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology. | Honorable Mentions Jess Saldaña, MFA/MA “That boy, Dorothy”: Countertransference, Gendered Scripts, and Queer Moments in the Intersubjective Playground” Jess Saldaña, MFA/MA (they/them) is a Chicane, trans-nonbinary activist, artist, and psychoanalytic candidate based in Brooklyn. They have an interest in intersubjective play in queer, trans, and mixed race children, adolescents, and adults. They are curious about integrating creative arts therapy into psychodynamic theory and practice. In 2024 they were granted the APsA Candidate in the Community Mentoring award, and their essay, The Analytic Goodbye: Memory, Primary Narcissism, and Dreams was declared the winner of the Division 39, Section 1 candidate essay contest. Michael Ryzner-Basiewicz “On Playing and When Not To, Dolto and Winnicott” Michael Ryzner-Basiewicz is a doctoral candidate in clinical psychology at Duquesne University. His work is focused on the intersection of French, British, and American psychoanalysis, particularly in the field of child analysis and the treatment of psychosis. Michael works with small children at a therapeutic nursery and trauma center, as well as with adolescents and adults through the Rita M. McGinley Psychology Clinic, a community mental health clinic in Pittsburgh. Michael was the 2023 section II Division 39 Psychoanalytic Scholars Award winner. He is a member of the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis and ISPS-US. Michael is currently writing his dissertation on the history and development of Lacanian psychoanalysis in the United States. Before his doctoral training, Michael worked with children and teenagers at the Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School in Chicago. |
Call for Papers Section II, Section on Childhood and Adolescence of Division 39 Announces – The Second Annual Susan C. Warshaw Award 2025 For an original manuscript pertaining to the following:
Topics in Child and Adolescent Psychodynamic Psychotherapy |
We encourage writers to submit manuscripts on topics of their own choosing under the broader umbrella of child and adolescent psychodynamic psychotherapy. Suggested topics may include but are not limited to:
We invite applicants to submit a manuscript of not more than 30 pages, in APA format. Theoretical, clinical and research perspectives are all welcome.
Who may apply: The manuscript must represent the applicant’s first psychodynamically-oriented publication in a peer reviewed journal. We especially encourage submissions from historically underrepresented groups, graduate students, candidates, and early career professionals.
This award will be granted to an individual whose writing is deemed exemplary by a committee of judges. The award includes a cash prize of $1,000 and, pending an independent editorial and peer review process, will be considered for publication with the Journal of Infant, Child & Adolescent Psychotherapy (JICAP), overseen by founding Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Kirkland Vaughans.
